The latest update to Android’s Find My Device is now going live across the globe, beginning with users in the United States and Canada. The service has been enhanced by a vast network comprising over one billion Android devices, which aims to assist users in swiftly and securely finding their missing Android devices and personal belongings. Here’s a rundown of the top five things you can do with it.

1. Tracking down devices without an internet connection

Now, you can make your compatible Android phone or tablet ring or see its location on a map through the app—even if it’s not connected to the internet. For owners of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, there’s an added perk: the ability to locate their devices even if they’re switched off or the battery has run out, thanks to specialized hardware unique to the latest Pixels.

2. Monitoring personal items with Bluetooth tags

Come May, you’ll have the opportunity to keep tabs on personal items such as keys, wallets, or bags via Bluetooth tracker tags created by Pebblebee and Chipolo, all through the Find My Device app. These tags are designed to work with the Find My Device network and will support cross-platform alerts for both iOS and Android to safeguard against unwanted tracking.

Additional Bluetooth tag options from brands like eufy, Motorola, Jio, and more are expected to arrive later this year.

3. Locating items nearby

It’s common to misplace things close by without realizing it. To address this, a “Find Nearby” option will be available to help pinpoint the exact location of your lost device. This feature will also apply to locating personal items tagged with Bluetooth when this functionality becomes available in May.

4. Find devices at home with Nest

Losing items within your home happens all too often. To make the search easier, the Find My Device app now integrates with your Nest home devices to indicate how close you are to your misplaced items, using your home as a point of reference.

5. Accessory sharing with family and friends

The app allows you to share access to an accessory with friends or family. For instance, you can share your house key with a roommate or luggage with a friend. By sharing the responsibility of keeping track of belongings, you can more effectively find them if they go missing.

To ensure security and privacy, Find My Device comes with multi-layered safety features, including end-to-end encryption of location data and aggregated location reporting. This innovative approach helps prevent unwanted tracking of your devices back to your home or private spaces.

Android Find My Device Compatibility

The updated Find My Device feature is compatible with devices running Android 9 and above. Roll out to other regions and more countries will be deployed in the next few months.
