The OPPO A-series are some of the most popular entry-level phones in the market, primarily thanks to their intriguing designs, price tag, and of course, the brand’s well-known marketing prowess. But with the new OPPO A60, the company has added a couple of extras to spice things up a bit.

On the device’s webpage, OPPO highlights the A60’s durable design, fast charging, and long-lasting battery. But are those enough for you to spend ~Php10,000 on it? Let’s find out in our OPPO A60 full review.

Design and Build Quality

The OPPO A60 passed the military-grade shock resistance test, earning it a MIL-STD-810H certification. I don’t have the heart to test the durability of our loaner unit, but technically, it should withstand accidental drops on some surfaces.

What’s more, the A60 is IP54-rated for being water and dust-resistant. It’s not meant to be drowned in water, but it should survive accidental water splashes or if you got caught in the rain.

The overall build quality feels nice. The frame is quite robust and feels thin at only 7.7mm. It’s very light as well at 186g. The flat edges provide a lot of grip when using the device in landscape (i.e. when watching content, or gaming), but the sharp corners make us miss the smoothness of curved phones.

The color that I have has a shiny, glass-like panel on the back. With a unique design underneath, fingerprint marks and smudges are almost unnoticeable.

Speaking of the design, the OPPO A60 is available in two colors. There’s the Midnight Purple which has a matte texture with shimmering accents; while the review unit I got is called Ripple Blue, the hero color that indeed looks like small waves as it reflects light.

In front, we have a 6.67-inch HD+ IPS display with a punch-hole for the 8-megapixel selfie camera. The bezels are quite thick, but still decent enough for an IPS panel.

On the top left, we have a large SIM tray that can house two nano SIM cards and a microSD card — all at the same time.

The right side has the volume controls and the lock/power switch that also works as a fingerprint scanner. Its physical buttons feel very well-made and tactile.

At the bottom, we have the USB-C port, loudspeaker, built-in microphone, and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the back, there’s a thin camera bump that has two large glasses: one for the main camera, while the 2-megapixel depth sensor and the LED flash share the other.

The OPPO A60 is a sturdy and stylish phone, and that’s not surprising considering the brand’s reputation.

Display and Sound Quality

The OPPO A60 has a pretty basic display. Here we have a 6.67-inch IPS screen with an HD+ resolution of 1604 x 720 pixels, 90Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling, and 950-nits of peak brightness.

As with most phones, you can open the settings and adjust the screen color modes. You can also configure the eye comfort settings by adjusting and scheduling the screen color temperature.

The screen refresh rate can also be set to Standard (60Hz), High (90Hz), or Auto Select for better efficiency.

OPPO-A60-Display-Review

I’m not a big fan of the HD+ resolution as most of its competition already has a sharper FHD+ screen. The lack of sharpness is really noticeable when reading small texts. On the upside, it is Widevine L1 certified, so HD streaming on platforms like Netflix is possible.

Color quality is fine and pretty usual for an IPS panel. The 950-nit brightness is also acceptable for outdoor use. Of course, it’s not as bright as high-end displays, but it’s good enough for casual users.

The inclusion of the stereo speakers is very much appreciated. It has a nice treble, decent bass, and a very discernible stereo separation that’s great for shooter games and watching videos.

It also has a 300% Ultra Volume Mode that makes it extra loud — handy if you’re in very loud environment or watching content with family and friends.

Hardware and Performance

The OPPO A60 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 octa-core processor, which is kinda decent choice for the price, unlike OPPO’s chipset decisions on their previous releases. It comes with an Adreno 610 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and an option between 128GB and 256GB of expandable storage.

OPPO A60 Benchmark Scores

Day-to-day performance was decent, but there are better performers at this price point. It feels a little sluggish, so if you want a smooth experience, you might have to spend a little more and get something more powerful.

Still, I was able to use social media apps fine, take pictures, edit photos, and more without substantial problems. However, hardcore gamers should look somewhere else, unless they’re fine playing games under low graphics settings.

OPPO-A60-gaming-Review

Using the Lowest settings, Genshin Impact was playable, as long as you’re okay with poor graphics and occasional frame drops. PUBG was smooth under Ultra frame rates but with the lowest graphics quality. Call of Duty and Mobile Legends had no issues running under Medium.

Farlight84 is playable on Low, but with occasional lags. The only game that played smoothly under the highest available settings is Asphalt 9: Legends. As a consolation, I didn’t experience any overheating issues during our gaming tests.

Software and User Interface

The OPPO A60 ships with an Android 14-based ColorOS 14 user interface. There’s no mention how long the update support will be, so I expect that it will only get limited coverage. On the upside, the current OS version feels clean and complete. I had no major issues.

It has a clean and well-organized app drawer. I spotted a couple of pre-installed games, which are thankfully removable.

But I’m not a fan of the app suggestions (organized in folders) that made the home screen look cluttered. They can be removed, but they shouldn’t be there in the first place.

There’s also a bunch of app suggestions on the security check page every time you install an app. These app suggestions may be generating small revenue, which helps OPPO make extra money off the device.

One cool feature I liked is the low storage pop-up, which lets you know that the storage is piling up and causing performance slow-down. It also gives you an option to access the storage cleaner.

Speaking of storage, I started getting the low storage pop-up after I installed 7 large apps and took more than a hundred photos. As mentioned earlier, the unit I have is the 128GB variant, so if you plan on hoarding apps and files, it’s best to get a microSD card or go with the 256GB model instead.

The storage cleaner is also handy. It analyzes the system for junk and cache which can be easily deleted with a press of a button.

If you plan on multitasking on this entry-level device, you can try split-screen mode by swiping up with three fingers. Floating window is also supported. You can also enable the Smart Sidebar to access commands and apps easily. Do note that with its limited processing power, multitasking between multiple apps might cause slowdowns.

Of course, virtual RAM expansion is also here, letting users expand memory by 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB by borrowing from the storage. Like other smartphones with this feature, the difference between it on and off is almost unnoticeable.

Despite its limited hardware, OPPO is trying to make it up in software. There’s a dedicated game window that lets you switch between three performance modes: Balanced, Low Power, and Pro Gamer. It also shows real-time fps counter, CPU and GPU load, temperature, latency, and even Spotify controls.

You can also enable Game Focus Mode, call blocker, touch and network optimization, screen recording, and more.

OPPO-A60-Game-Center

The camera app is intuitive with a bunch of features that are easy to access. It then uses Google Keyboard by default, just like most brands today. It’s fast to get used to, although I’m not a fan of the letter ñ running the layout that results in a bunch of typos. That’s because it’s a PH keyboard by default, but it can easily be changed in the settings.

Cameras

The OPPO A60 has a 50-megapixel main camera with f/1.8 aperture joined by a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Sadly, it didn’t get to have an ultra-wide lens. An 8-megapixel selfie camera is on the front.

OPPO-A60-Camera-Review

Image quality is nothing to write home about. Daylight shots have nice colors, but the contrast is a bit off at times. It also struggles to handle dynamic range and the details are not that sharp for a 50-megapixel camera.

Low-light shots look surprisingly good, just make sure you have steady hands as images would look blurry due to the slow shutter speed. Night mode helps, but not much.

There’s a 2x button that crops the main sensor for a 2x zoom shot. It’s best paired with the Portrait Mode and captures lot of light, so images look nice.

Finally, we have the 8-megapixel front-facing camera, which performs really well. Daylight and low-light shots look pleasant, details are ample, although skin tones look a little light. Software processing is also very evident, even after disabling them in the camera settings.

Battery Life and Charging

The OPPO A60 has the standard 5,000mAh battery that most phones have today. Charging is done by the 45W SUPERVOOC adapter. While it’s less than half of the 100W chargers of flagship smartphones, it’s fast enough for quick top ups.

Battery life is decent, but not good. It only lasted for 13 hours and 42 minutes in the PCMark battery test, which is slightly below than the average score I get of 14 hours. The test runs synthetic workloads until the battery drops to 20% from 100%.

In a more realistic test, the device lasted for 12 hours and 32 minutes in our 1080p YouTube video loop test, which I ran util the battery dropped to 0. That’s with the screen brightness and volume set at 50%. Unfortunately, its score is way below the 17 hours I usually get from this test. It’s likely because it uses an older chipset than the competition, which are now way better in terms of power efficiency.

OPPO-A60-Charging-Test

Battery life might not be stellar, but the charging speed of the 45W SUPERVOOC adapter is pretty good and one of the fastest for the price. A 15-minute charge provides 25% of juice, with a full charge taking about an hour and ten minutes. See the full charging test below:

  • 15mins: 0-25%
  • 30mins: 47%
  • 45mins: 70%
  • ~1hr 10mins: FULL

Verdict

The OPPO A60 is an acceptable daily driver for the price. It has a durable build, decent performance for day-to-day tasks, feature-packed and smooth interface, okay cameras, and speedy charging.

OPPO-A60-Review-5821

However, there are alternatives out there that already offer a sharper FHD+ screen, better processor, and even more pixel-dense cameras. But if the MIL-STD-810H, IP54 certification, stylish design, and brand reliability are important to you, it’s still a decent choice for its asking price.

OPPO A60 pricing and availability in the Philippines

The OPPO A60 8GB/128GB, the unit I reviewed, retails for Php9,999, while the top-of-the-line 8GB/256GB is at Php11,999.

Pros

  • MIL-STD-810H, IP54-rated design
  • Smooth, polished interface
  • Stereo speakers
  • Decent cameras
  • 45W SUPERVOOC

Cons

  • Only HD+ display
  • So-so gaming performance
  • Annoying app suggestions
  • No ultra-wide camera
