Even as a few of Xiaomi’s hotly anticipated devices haven’t made it to Philippine shores yet, the Chinese smartphone maker has just announced an all new entry level offering, the Redmi 2S.

Although it packs the same-sized screen, the Redmi 2S’ 4.7 inch HD IPS display now benefits from OGS technology, significantly eliminating the gap between the display and the glass surface. Another cool upgrade is the Snapdragon 410 Soc, which has a 64-bit quad core CPU and Adreno 306 GPU. Then there’s 4G/LTE support, which a lot of fans have been clamoring for.

The rest of the specs are pretty ho-hum. There’s 1GB RAM to go along with 8GB of storage. There’s also an 8mp rear-facing camera and 2mp front camera to handle imaging duties. All of which is powered by a 2,200mAh battery while Android 4.4 KitKat runs it.

The price of the Redmi 2S has been announced to be 699 yuan for its Chinese launch. That translates to a little more than Php5k after straight conversion. While I rarely expect such devices to retain such low pricing after import dues have had their way with them, Xiaomi has been exceptionally good at retaining the price to as close to Chinese SRP as possible. Hopefully, they’ll be able to do the same thing with the Redmi 2S.
