Xiaomi announced a new smartphone line under their Redmi brand. Dubbed as the Redmi Y series, these devices are aimed for the “Youth” — which is another term for those shopping in the budget section.
With the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite, you’d expect a set of features that are usually found on a Xiaomi smartphone.
The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 is a 5.5-inch HD device that’s powered by a Snapdragon 435 octa-core processor. It’s then partnered by an Adreno 505 GPU, and an option between a 3GB/32GB of 4GB/64GB RAM and storage configurations. A decent combo for its price tag.
Inside it’s powered by a 3080mAh battery and considering the mediocre screen resolution and processing prowess that it has to power, it will definitely be enough to last you for a day. As a bonus Xiaomi also added an Infrared Blaster, so you don’t have to go searching through the couch for the TV remote control.

And of course, Xiaomi is also highlighting its selfie-taking features. The Redmi Y1 brags a 16-megapixel front camera combined with its Beautify 3.0 software tricks. The camera is also backed with a “soft-toned” flash for taking selfies in low-light.

Next stop, we have the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite — obviously, a more toned down version of the former. Fortunately, it doesn’t fall short on providing the essentials.
It still has the same 5.5-inch HD screen, a 3080mAh battery, and a 13-megapixel camera at the back. However, everything else has been dialed down a little.
The processor is now only a Snapdragon 425, with only 2GB RAM and 16GB storage configuration available. The front camera also plummeted to 5-megapixel and the fingerprint scanner has been removed.
But to end on a good note, the Redmi Y1 Lite will still have Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9, just like the Redmi Y1.
