The 5G era is clearly here. Its coverage is starting to improve, and the smartphones that have it are starting to get a lot cheaper. In today’s comparison, we’ll be stacking two 5G phones in the sub-Php20,000 price range.

First, we have the crowd-favorite OnePlus Nord. The company’s comeback to the midrange category is a much-anticipated one, as the fans are curious about what the high-end brand plans to offer in the midrange segment.

We’ll be stacking that device to another 5G-enabled 5G phone, the OPPO Reno 4 Z 5G.

Design and Build Quality

It’s evident in the specs comparison table above that the OnePlus Nord was built way better than the Reno 4 Z 5G. It’s sandwiched with Gorilla Glass 5 and has an aluminum body.

On the other hand, the OPPO device settles for a plastic back panel. The Gorilla Glass screen on the front is also inferior to the former.

But, we do like the unique X design of the camera layout. Still, we’d prefer having a sturdier glass back than plastic.

The OnePlus Nord also has more interesting color options, particularly the Cyan-like Blue Marble model. On the downside, neither have full-on water-resistant protection.

Display and Audio

The OnePlus Nord and OPPO Reno 4 Z 5G has similarly-sized screens with FHD+ pixel resolution. Pretty standard for midrange phones. But obviously, the OnePlus device takes the win on this one.

It may not have 120Hz refresh rate, but the Nord’s 90Hz screen and a more vibrant AMOLED panel are enough to make up for it. That should make playing and watching more entertaining.

On the downside, the OnePlus Nord lacks a headphone jack. Unless you still have wired headphones or don’t want to use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter for some reason, this shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. However, we wish that they had stereo speakers.

Hardware and Performance

The OnePlus Nord and OPPO Reno 4 Z 5G get to have 5G connectivity thanks to their modern chipsets. The former relies on the popular Snapdragon 765G CPU, while the latter uses Dimensity 800.

A couple of benchmarks and performance reviews reveal that the performance between the two chipsets are neck-and-neck. Albeit, you shall expect better power efficiency and developer support with the Qualcomm chip.

The Nord is also available in 12GB/256GB variant, which the model you might want to get since neither devices have a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

Camera

The two have similar cameras, but ultimately, we gotta hand the win to the OnePlus Nord. As you can see, they both have 48-megapixel main cameras, 8-megapixel ultra-wide, two auxiliary sensors, and dual selfie cameras.

Where the Nord shines is with its optical image stabilizer (OIS), sharper 32-megapixel selfie camera, and a more usable 8-megapixel ultra-wide front-facing shooter.

Battery

The scores are close on this one, but still, the OnePlus device ends up victorious. As you can see, it has a 4,115mAh battery — marginally bigger than the 4,000mAh of the OPPO Reno 4 Z 5G.

It also has OnePlus’s Warp Charge 30T technology that’s faster than Reno 4 Z’s 18W fast charger.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Nord starts at Php21,990 with 8GB/128GB. That’s the same only configuration that the OPPO Reno 4 Z 5G has, but Php1,000 cheaper at Php20,990. If you want more RAM and storage, the Nord comes with a 12GB/256GB configuration for Php4,000 more at Php25,990.

I guess we have a clear winner here. The OnePlus Nord is proven superior to the Reno 4 Z thanks to its premium design, power-efficient processor, better cameras, and larger batter with faster-charging technology.

Both devices are now available in the Philippines, with the Reno 4 Z exclusively available through telco postpaid plans.
