Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) is rumored to be coming to the Epic Games store today until May 21, 2020.
According to Game Pressure, a ‘reliable source’ with knowledge on the matter has revealed that Epic Games’ ‘mystery game’ is the extremely popular open world game GTA 5.
Back when the game was officially launched in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V costs $60 (~Php3,000). The price has gone down significantly since then, with some Steam sales dropping it under $20.
The GTA V coming to the Epic Games store is said to be a ‘Premium Edition’. Even if it’s a free offer, there’s no limitation to the game and it even has access to the multiplayer Grand Theft Auto Online (GTA Online). The source also notes that there will be ‘a lot of additional content’ included.
From its original launch up to this day, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 120 million copies around the world — making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.
But why is Rockstar giving free access to GTA 5? Well, one possibility is because of the growing popularity of GTA Online. According to Take-Two Interactive’s financial report, microtransactions made the company a lot of money. And with GTA V going free-to-play even for a limited time, the increase in players is expected to go through the roof. In other words, the company is probably banking on the gamers buying the microtransactions.
Rockstar Games is rumored to be developing the Grand Theft Auto VI for a long time now, but we haven’t seen anything substantial until this day.
The mystery game will be unlocked in approximately 20 hours from now, around 11PM in Philippine time. If you want to camp out, here’s the link to the Epic Games store.
