Sony has announced a new groundbreaking controller designed to improve gaming accessibility for people with disabilities. The Access Controller, created in collaboration with accessibility consultants, aims to address the unique needs of disabled gamers and make gaming experiences more inclusive.

This effort aligns with the gaming industry’s ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility in gaming. Over the past few years, various startups, Microsoft, and 3D printing enthusiasts have also been working towards creating innovative technology for disabled gamers.

The Access Controller, which is round in shape, can be customized according to individual requirements and is designed to be used on a table or even a wheelchair tray. The controller’s versatility allows it to be configured in numerous ways, enabling users to quickly switch thumbsticks and buttons, and program special controls. It can even pair two separate controllers to function as one.

One of the disabled gamers who contributed to the design of the Access controller is Paul Lane, a 52-year-old gamer. Previously, Lane played video games by manipulating the original PlayStation controller with his mouth, chin, and cheek. Sony has worked closely with Lane for the past 5 years, aiming to create a controller that caters to a wide range of needs rather than focusing solely on a specific disability.

The Access controller is not limited to use by disabled individuals alone. Sony has partnered with Logitech and the accessibility community to develop the official accessory kit for the controller, called the Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit. This kit, available from January 2024 for $79.99 USD, offers supplementary controls for the Access controller. The Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit allows users to assign, swap, and label the durable triggers and buttons to cater to their specific preferences.

The Access controller is thoughtfully designed with user convenience in mind. The packaging is easily opened with one hand, and loops on both sides provide easy access. Interior slots within the packaging help users organize the kit components, including 3 stick caps and 19 interchangeable buttons, making them easily identifiable.

In addition, users have the option to combine up to two Access controllers to function as a single virtual controller or combine one or two Access controllers with a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller to enjoy additional features such as haptic feedback, touchpad swipe, motion sensors, and adaptive triggers.

Sony’s Access controller represents a major step forward in making gaming more accessible to individuals with disabilities. With its customizable design and array of features, it aims to create a more inclusive gaming environment for all players.

The new Sony PlayStation Access controller will be available worldwide from December 6th at a cost of $90 (approximately Php5,100) in the United States.
