Sony, the creator of the PlayStation (PS) gaming console brand, is reportedly in the early stages of developing a handheld gaming console that allows users to play PS5 games and challenge Nintendo Switch’s dominance in the portable gaming space.
The details are from a Bloomberg report that interviewed people from Sony who refused to be named about the supposedly new portable gaming gadget.
They added that the potential next-gen Sony portable gaming device is still years away from launch and may still be scrapped before it even makes it to the market.
When Sony was asked about this, their spokespersons declined to comment on the matter. So, for now, details about the potential new portable PlayStation, including its functionality, connectivity, and games, are purely speculation.
You may remember Sony’s last attempt in the handheld gaming console market through the PS Vita, which was discontinued in 2019. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) used to compete against Nintendo DS in the mid-2000s but has also been out of the market for more than a decade.
Aside from the uphill battle against Nintendo, which is set to release its Switch successor in 2025, the mobile gaming industry and its mobile games are also currently dominating the handheld gaming scene.
