The Department of Information and Communications Technology is targeting more public areas in Visayas and Mindanao to be covered by its Free WiFi for All Program.
In a released statement, DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan II said his department would fulfill its promise to get every citizen connected online, wherever they may be in the country.
This year, 267 barangays in Visayas Cluster 2 are scheduled to get free WiFi sites. Seventy of these barangays are classified as remote locations under the Managed Information System-Geographical Isolated Disadvantageous Areas, in which case their free Internet access will be made possible via very small aperture terminal technology.
The Mindanao Cluster 2, on the other hand, will have 164 target locations for the free WiFi, spanning across several provinces and cities, including Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro City, Camiguin, Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental.
As of March 10, there are 8,170 free WiFi sites provided by DICT’s program.
