E-bikes have quickly emerged as one of the most popular modes of transportation in the Philippines. Rightfully so, as they are relatively cheaper than traditional motorcycles, more mobile and is easy to navigate, and obtain.

But, it’s no secret that e-bikes have brought up new issues to the already chaotic Philippine roads. Due to the lack of regulations that other two-wheel and four-wheel vehicles have, many e-bike riders aren’t required to have a valid driver’s license, which means they don’t have the proper seminars and education on road safety and regulations.

Now, it appears that the government is finally addressing this issue, especially since more and more e-bikes are coming out on the roads today.

As per LTO Chief Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, they may soon require all e-bikes to be registered regardless of their classification and capabilities.

Currently, the law states that e-bikes that only run up to 25km/h are not required to be registered. However, Mendoza said that they’d “like to deviate from that thinking” and they are currently preparing a proposal that even if the e-bike doesn’t reach such speeds, “if it is being used on national highways like EDSA and the operator is a minor and is not a valid driver’s license holder, we have a problem.”

We shall learn more about this proposed rule as the LTO irons out the details.
