The national government is keen in expanding the reach of its planned free public Wi-Fi program that it’s eyeing to allocate yet another Php2.4 billion peso for the extension, Makati City representative Luis Campos Jr. claims on Monday, Sept. 28.

As of writing, the said added budget for the Free Internet Wi-Fi Connectivity in Public Places Project is already charged as part of Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) overall budget for 2021, Campos said.

If set into motion, the initiative will see password-free Wi-Fi hotspots in wider public venues, such as plazas, parks, barangay reading centers, as well as libraries. In addition, it will also cover areas such as rural health units, health centers, hospitals, airports, seaports, and public transport terminals.

Technically also areas where a large gathering of people occurs, locations such as local government offices and training centers under Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will be included as part of the project’s overall scope.
