Starting a WordPress blog is really easy. This guide will show you how you can create one with the help of screenshots and detailed explanation. Check it out after the break.
A lot of our readers have been asking us lately on how they can start their own blog and I finally decided to write an easy to follow guide so that all of you can read it in one place instead of answering everyone’s emails one by one.
Starting a blog is fairly easy, but there are some things that you should consider. Do you want to really own your blog? Do you want to buy your own domain name? Or you just want to get your feet wet?
In today’s tutorial, we’ll walk you through in getting a self-hosted WordPress blog up and running. First of all, you will need to spend some cash here. We’ll need your own domain and web host, but in case you already have them, then we’re good. If you don’t want to spend a dime, you can try WordPress.com which is a free but limited alternative. I’ve listed down some points to consider between WordPress.org and .com here.
Payment Methods?
If you have a credit card, then you can shop online as long as it’s VISA or Mastercard. But I know most of us don’t have one, so the easiest and most efficient way to shop online is by using Globe GCash American Express (AMEX). You can get one by following the instructions on this site.
It’ll also be very convenient if you have a Paypal account as you can easily link it to your GCash AMEX. It’s supported by almost all web merchants so be sure to sign up for an account there. I’ve written a tutorial on how to do PayPal verification using Globe GCash AMEX here. By linking your account, you can purchase almost anything with it as it’ll automatically get charged on your AMEX if you don’t have PayPal funds available. Why use international service providers? I’ll explain them in a bit.
Getting the domain
I always advise everyone to buy their domain on popular domain registrars like Namecheap and GoDaddy as both of them occasionally run ridiculous discounts and you can get domains for as low as $0.99. That’s amazingly cheap for a year of domain registration. I personally registered numerous cheap domain names during those occasions. As for local registrars, you’ll be charged for Php400-500 which is relatively more expensive.
1. Sign up for an account on your chosen registrar. With this guide, I used my favorite and trusted registrar, Namecheap.com.
2. Search if your domain name is available.
3. Click add to cart then apply a coupon code if there are any. We used “BUYTHEDOMAIN” here so the price was slashed down to only $6.17. (Namecheap)
4. Click Express Checkout and you’ll see the page below.
5. As you can see, there’s the AMEX logo there which I used for paying for the domain name. Select Pay with Credit Card and input your Globe GCash AMEX details.
6. Voila! You now have your own domain name.
Buy a Shared Web hosting/VPS hosting
You now have your own name in the web but it doesn’t have a house yet. So we’re going to get a web hosting service for it. There are several popular choices such as Hostgator, Bluehost, and Hostmonster – but we’re hosting with Hostgator for this guide as it’s one of the most reliable web host out there. You can always choose which host you want as this is just my recommendation.
If you have knowledge on Linux systems, you can also get an affordable VPS from Digital Ocean starting at $5/month which is billed per hour so you can cancel anytime you want to and just be charged on how long you used it. They are unmanaged but I highly commend their awesome community for always being helpful for any questions. They also deploy a VPS in as fast as 55 seconds unlike other hosts which need 24-48 hours.
Buy at Hostgator
1. Go to Hostgator.com and click the Order Now button.
2. Choose the Hosting Plan you would like to buy. We will use the Hatchling Plan for this guide.
3. Fill up the required fields with your information and card details (or use PayPal and enter your payment details later).
4. Enter a coupon code if you have one for tremendous discounts. Don’t use that coupon below. I just found another one “2013BLOWOUT” – only $0.01 for the first month then $8.95 for the succeeding months. If you have enough budget, I would highly suggest to get the longer plans at it will give you a huge discount.
5. Tick the terms and conditions then click the create account. Pay for your subscription.
6. Check your email address.
Create the WordPress Blog
Now that you have all the things needed, it’s time to actually create the blog. First, you need to point the nameservers of your newly bought domain name. Go to Manage Domains on your Namecheap dashboard and look for your domain.
1. On your manage domains dashboard, click Transfer DNS to Webhost.
2. Replace the default nameservers with the one from your new web host. It’s usually included in the welcome email from your web host.
3. If you already put your domain name upon your registration on your web hosting account, proceed to step 5.
4. Log in on your cPanel and add your domain.
5. Go to Fantastico, Softcalous, QuickInstall, or any one-click WordPress installer on your cPanel.
6. Install WordPress. Replace the default information with yours. Make sure to take note of your password and make it secure by adding numbers and special characters. Click Install Now!
7. Congratulations! You now have your own WordPress blog!
