Apple has recently been granted a patent that hints at a possible significant design change for future iPhone models.

The patent, first spotted by AppleInsider, is for a technology that could introduce a side-mounted display to the iPhones, reminiscent of the Touch Bar that once graced the 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 chip in 2020.

This proposed side display would be a narrow screen located below the volume or power buttons on the side of the iPhone. Unlike some current smartphones such as the HONOR Magic 6 Pro, vivo V30 Pro, and OPPO Reno11 Pro, which features a display that curves around the edges, Apple’s design seems to focus on a display distinct from the main screen on the front.

The potential uses for a side-mounted display are varied. It might display notifications, allow users to control music playback, or even launch applications, much like the existing Dynamic Island feature on newer iPhones. This innovation could also potentially replace some of the iPhone’s physical buttons. There are already rumors about the iPhone 15 Pro moving from a capacitive Action button to a mechanical one in the iPhone 16, so this new display could be the next step in Apple’s design evolution.

In the patent’s accompanying illustrations, Apple showcases the use of app icons for Messages, Calendar, and Camera to demonstrate the versatility of the side display. However, it’s important to note that patent filings are often just the first step in exploring a concept and do not always lead to actual product development. Sometimes, companies file patents to prevent competitors from using similar ideas.

Despite this, it’s clear that Apple is exploring different designs for its iPhones, with rumors circulating about a foldable iPhone potentially launching by 2026. With consumers expecting more than minor updates with each new iPhone release, it’s likely that Apple will deliver some substantial design changes in the future.

While it’s too early to expect a side-mounted display on the upcoming iPhone 16, it’s reasonable to anticipate some exciting design innovations from Apple in the coming years.
