One thing about living in the Philippines is that we don’t get to enjoy the same kinds of speeds and access to content that other countries like the U.S. enjoy. One such service is movie streaming, and much of this has to do with the lack of these kinds of providers, not to mention the necessary speeds to make the whole experience enjoyable.
Well just a little after a month of launching the HOME brand of the PLDT Group, PLDT Fibr subscribers now have the ability to enjoy a Netflix-style service offered by Clickplay.ph and they don’t even have to pay for it!
How does this work? Well, Clickplay just happens to be the country’s first movie-streaming website, and being partly owned by Magnavision, it maintains a selection of hit movies from Warner Studios ready to be streamed to our homes through Fibr’s blazing fast connections. Subscribers will get a set number of movies per month, which will depend on the plan that they’ve subscribed to. Check out the pricing and movie allocation per plan.
PLDT Fibr plans
- PLDT Fibr 8Mbps – Php3,500 per month / 3 Clickplay movies
- PLDT Fibr 20Mbps – Php5,800 per month / 4 Clickplay movies
- PLDT Fibr 50Mbps – Php8,800 per month / 10 Clickplay movies
- PLDT Fibr 100Mbps – Php20,000 per month / 20 Clickplay movies
PLDT HOME allowed us to experience the Clickplay service firsthand through a Fibr connection. It certainly seems like a really convenient way to enjoy these kinds of movies from home and not have to go through the costly endeavor of taking the whole family to the mall and spending on things like popcorn and drinks. It doesn’t take long to find a movie you like and start watching. You can even resume a movie from where you last stopped it if you didn’t get to finish it the last time. And thanks to Fibr’s speeds, the experience is as close as you can get to a buffering-free movie watching experience.
Still, there are some limitations to the service at the moment. One is that movies are only in standard quality at best. We were watching from an 80 inch screen (guesstimate) and the pixels were very evident at that size. Considering Fibr is currently targeting the most exclusive villages, it’s likely that there’ll be a lot of subscribers who’ll be watching these movies through 32 inch or better screen. Another is that the service is built on top of Microsoft Silverlight, so you’ll only be able to enjoy it through a Windows powered desktop, laptop or tablet PC. Finally, if you exceed that set number of movies for the month, there’s no way you can rent more.
Of course, who am I to complain? It’s free with a Fibr subscription after all. And Clickplay does plan to support access to their service through other internet-enabled devices like Smart TVs, tablets and smartphones. Also, the entry-level Fibr plan is quite affordable. All PLDT Fibr plans even come with a Voice line and a free PLDT Telpad unit.
