While it’s common for a flagship smartphone to get a mini or lite spinoff, it’s rather rare for that spinoff to be announced first. Such is the case for the Huawei Ascend P7 mini, having been recently revealed ahead of the larger, full-blown variant.

As a mid-range phone and a teaser of things to come, the Huawei Ascend P7 mini boasts 4G LTE connectivity, a quad-core Snapdragon CPU, 1GB of RAM, and the company’s own Emotion UI on top of 4.3 Jelly Bean. The display is a letdown for having only a qHD resolution. Its specs remind me of the Ascend G6–are they actually the same phone? Hmm…

European markets will be the first to receive the Huawei Ascend P7 mini in the coming weeks. It’s expected to be priced around 275 euros. The larger Ascend P7, on the other hand, will have its formal debut come May 7.
