Leaked for a quite a while now, Meizu finally made its latest flagship smartphone official. The new Meizu MX4 delivers several improvements in both hardware and software, the key aspect being the MediaTek MT6595 chipset powering the device.

The follow-up to the MT6592, the MT6595 touts eight cores designed to work in big.LITTLE architecture (i.e., half the number of cores working with battery-efficiency in mind, while the remaining four only getting tapped when a boost in performance is needed). It’s capable of reaching 40000 in Antutu benchmarks. That the Meizu MX4 has this chipset running under its hood also means it gets to enjoy powerful PowerVR G6200 graphics and 4G LTE connectivity.

Its predecessor, the Meizu MX3, also made the headlines last year by being the world’s first phone with 128GB onboard storage (though it’s only available in China, and other markets only get to use variants with smaller storage).

Included among the major changes found in the Meizu MX4 is the preinstalled Flyme 4.0 OS, the company’s own customization of Android based on version 4.4.4 KitKat. Several interfaces and icons have been revamped to bring a uniform, flatter look to the software. It’s also hard to ignore the upgraded camera sensors: there’s a 20.7-megapixel Sony Exmor RS sensor (five-element lens, F/2.2 aperture, 0.3 autofocus motor, nightlight stabilization) at the back, while a 2-megapixel Sony IMX208 sensor resides in front of the device.

Those who were able to catch the pre-order campaign in China will have their Meizu MX4 smartphone shipped by September 20. The company intends to hold another round of sale soon. The basic 16GB model costs 1799 yuan (around Php12,800), while the 64GB variant is priced at 2399 yuan (around Php17,000). Available colors are black, white, and gold.
