In the first quarter of 2024, Apple experienced a decrease in its smartphone shipments by approximately 10%, as reported by IDC. This setback is attributed to increasing competition from Android-based smartphone manufacturers who are vying for dominance in the market.
During the January to March timeframe, the worldwide smartphone market saw an uplift in shipments, totaling 289.4 million units—a 7.8% rise from the previous quarter. Samsung claimed the lead with a 20.8% share, dropping Apple to second place.

Last December 2023, Apple momentarily surpassed Samsung, achieving the status of the world’s leading phone manufacturer. However, with a current market share of 17.3%, Apple now trails behind Samsung as Chinese smartphone makers continue to expand their presence in the market.
Xiaomi, another prominent player from China, secured the third rank, holding a 14.1% market share in the first quarter of 2024.

IDC’s data reveals that Apple’s iPhone shipments totaled 50.1 million during the first quarter, a decline from the 55.4 million shipped in the same period the prior year.
Transsion sits at the #4 spot with 28.5 million shipments and 9.9% market share. It’s closely followed by OPPO at #5 with 8.7% market share and 25.2 million smartphone shipments globally.
