To help users make a great first impression, popular dating app Tinder has launched an innovative AI-powered feature named “Photo Selector.” This new tool is designed to assist users in curating the best possible profile pictures from their photo libraries.
The process begins with users uploading a profile photo or selfie to generate biometric data. The AI then scans through the user’s camera roll, evaluating photos based on factors such as lighting and composition. Despite the AI’s assistance, users retain full control over which curated photos they ultimately choose to upload to their Tinder profiles. Importantly, the Photo Selector works entirely on-device, ensuring that Tinder does not collect or access any photos from users’ galleries.
A recent survey conducted by Tinder highlighted the difficulties many singles face when selecting profile images. According to the survey, 52% of singles find it challenging to pick the right photos, and 68% believe an AI feature would be beneficial in this regard. The survey also revealed that individuals aged 18 to 24 spend an average of 33 minutes selecting photos for their dating profiles.

The introduction of Photo Selector follows several other AI-driven features aimed at improving user experience on Tinder. These include “Does This Bother You?” and “Are You Sure?,” which are designed to filter out potentially offensive language.
Tinder isn’t the only dating app leveraging AI technology to enhance user safety and experience. Competitor Bumble employs AI with its “Private Detector” tool, which automatically blurs inappropriate images, and “Deception Detector,” which aims to identify and remove potential scammers from the platform.
