Finding companionships, intimate relationships, and dating in general has become an easy feat the past few years ever since the introduction of dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble. However, the future of dating apps may lie with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

According to Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of one of the popular dating apps mentioned above (Bumble), Artificial Intelligence or AI might play a significant role in later features of dating applications.

Herd ‘predicts’ that AI can assist users of dating apps by having our mobile device’s personal AI meet with hundreds of other AIs in order to find the right match for us. That’s literally one AI technology dating other AIs in our stead just to find the right partner for its user.

Many were quick to point out that this idea is literally a Black Mirror episode back in 2017 titled “Hang the DJ” where the characters are matched with one another through technology doing majority of the work. However, the pair has to stick with one another until the ‘expiry date’ also imposed by technology.

This leads to both positive and negative consequences depending on whether the pair’s relationship becomes intimate during their time together, or getting out of a toxic relationship where both are not meant for each other.

Herd was former CEO of Bumble but stepped down just last year while maintaining involvement with the said company. While her suggestion earned laughter, she stood firm and serious with her suggestion backing up with an example there is a possibility to narrow down people one should ought to meet, say, in a city where the population is 600 or more.

It’s defiinitely coming out as an AI-ran “dating concierge,” and truth be told, it’s not an entirely far-off idea nor something impossible. Already, there are people harnessing the power of AI for relationship or dating reasons.

One man in Moscow, Aleksandr Zhadan, played around with OpenAI’s GPT large language models and programmed it to communicate with over 5,000 women. In the end, he was able to marry one of those women.

Still, the handing the future of dating apps and communicating with people to AI has its troubles especially when it comes to the authenticity of emotions and real communication that all of us wants to have. Besides, no one wants to speak to an AI pretending like its user.

Meanwhile, Bumble is working on AI-generated messages which they dub as the “Opening Move” feature in case the user isn’t sure on what to say to a potential match.

What do you think about Herd’s take on the future of online dating apps and the AI-ran “concierge?” Let us know your opinions.
