The legendary mangaka of Dragon Ball Akira Toriyama is back again in business, with a new anime based on the franchise currently in the works, according to Toei Animation at the New York Comic Con. The developing project is slated for a fall 2024 release.
Dubbed “Dragon Ball Daima,” whose last word translates to “large” or “big” in Japanese, the anime once again revolves around the series’ heroes Goku and Vegeta. But this time, with ostensibly different looks, somewhat contrasting the meaning of the word big. Aesthetics-wise, the working anime will feature a chibi design that makes every character in the franchise unique and cute in their own way.
The franchise may be heavily tied to Akira Toriyama, which elaborately displays his signature art style. But the series creator is not always involved with the anime, such was the case with Dragon Ball GT. That will not be the case with Dragon Ball Daima, however, as Toriyama himself will directly be a part of the anime’s production.
Citing the degree of Toriyama’s involvement in the project, Executive Producer Akio Iyoku said that he is “deeply involved beyond his usual capacity overseeing the original work, story, character design, and more.” He added that the series creator even “planned entirely new episodes for the storyline.”
Although Iyoku did not disclose the reason behind the “Daima” label, he said that the name for anime was decided days before the NYCC. Further, he gives credit to Toriyama for meticulously crafting the various elements of the show, particularly the designs.
