As of 2022, the OnePlus 10T is the fastest charging phones in the world, reaching a full charge in just 19 minutes. Expect newer phones to break the record soon as they feature better charging tech. Smartphone charging truly has come a long way since the first iPhone, which took three hours to charge in full.
But if were up to one technical engineer at Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO, the innovation on charging don’t stop until smartphones could reach 100% charge in just a second.
In an interview with TechRadar, OPPO’s Charging Technology Lab head Edward Tian thought of such feat as the ultimate goal that pushes him to “break limits” and continue exploring for scientific breakthroughs.
Though we’re getting closer, Tian enumerated several hurdles that still need to be overcome before one-second charging becomes a reality.
He said speed isn’t the only factor as there are also the temperature and energy density of the battery to consider, along with the battery lifespan and charger size. Safety is also an important factor, or battery explosions would be more common otherwise.
In case you didn’t know, OPPO, OnePlus, Realme, and Vivo belong to the same parent company—BBK Electronics.
