Owners of SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro Portable SSD need to be wary of the data they’ve stored in these solid-state drives, as reports of sudden data loss and device failures have been surfacing for several months.

Users from online forums and discussions, especially on Reddit, have shared their frustrating experiences detailing instances of losing irreplaceable documents and multimedia content. The discussions mostly involve the 2TB and 4TB models of the Extreme and Extreme Pro V2 SSDs, with one Redditor claiming only drives manufactured after November 2022 are affected.

Making things worse is that SanDisk is seemingly responding with a lack of urgency. Users who contacted SanDisk have mostly been directed to open a ticket to receive support from the technical support staff, while requests for refund have largely gone unanswered apparently.

Amid the growing customer complaints, a representative of SanDisk’s parent company Western Digital released a statement in response to Ars Technica. Acknowledging the problems encountered by users of the 4TB models of SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro portable SSDs, the company assured that a firmware update will be available on their website to rectify the issue.

However, the spokesperson did not confirm if firmware update would work on the affected 2TB models. No specific release date for the firmware was mentioned either.

Regardless of whether this incident influences your decision to purchase SanDisk storage devices in the future, it underscores the critical importance of diligently creating backups for your valuable data.
