The University of the Philippines Los Baños is taking an eco-friendly move within its campus as it advocates the “bike culture,” via bike rentals.

In addition to traditional bicycles, Tipaklong Sustainable Mobility Corp.—the UPLB alumni’s bike rental business—the university also looks to lease e-bikes and e-scooters for the university community.

The ride-sharing system, once implemented, will be the first among every higher institution (HEI) in the country.

In a statement on February 18, 2024, UBLB said that rentals can be conducted through mobile phone applications. In conjunction with the commercial aspect, the business also seeks to incorporate a feasibility study that seeks to measure elements such as “total number of trips, distance traveled, and carbon dioxide emissions avoided, among others.

Apart from taking an environment-friendly approach, the program also offers the benefit of improved security around the campus, as the UPLB Security and Safety Office will be given bicycle units to help them with their patrol operations.

To motivate the community to integrate with the “green and active transport” goal of the program, UPLB will be placing more racks of bikes throughout the campus.

But while having a thriving community of cyclists within the campus could imply poor pedestrians, the university’s Transportation System and Traffic Management Master Plan (TSTMMP) is establishing bike lanes to prosper “road safety of cyclists”.
