The Indonesian government plans to issue a resolution to set an age limit for social media users and other related measures to protect children in the digital space.

This move is similar to Australia’s earlier decision to approve a social media ban for children under 16 by setting fines for tech giants like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube if they don’t follow.

Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said they were preparing a resolution banning social media use for certain ages but did not specify the minimum age. These comments followed a discussion with President Prabowo Subianto.

The move is Indonesia’s step toward ensuring children’s safety in the digital age. However, with a population of over 280 million (4th in the world) and an Internet penetration of 66.5 percent (185.3 million), according to DataReportal, the execution plan for the social media ban would be crucial.

A survey by Indonesia’s Internet Service Providers’ Association of 8,700 respondents showed that 48% of children under 12 years old have access to the Internet, while 87% of Gen Z users (aged 12 to 27) have access to the Internet.
