OPPO-Innovations-SIGGRAPH-2023

OPPO is proving itself to be a leader in tech as it brings innovations in mobile graphics, ray tracing, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and graphics rendering at SIGGRAPH 2023, the world’s premier forum for computer graphics and interactive technologies.

To showcase its groundbreaking technologies, OPPO gave the audience a chance to get their hands on the global smartphone brand’s leading devices, such as the OPPO Pad 2, OPPO Find X6 Pro, and OnePlus 11.

OPPO surprised the world when it campaigned to develop the industry’s first open ray tracing solutions for mobile in 2021, which it called the PhysRay Engine. A year later, PhysRay Engine 1.0 made its debut, where it was made available for modification and redistribution to developers across the globe. In the same year, OPPO unveiled an upgraded version of PhysRay with PhysRay Engine 2.0, which has seen an integration of advanced features, like mixed rendering pipeline, ray tracing, OPPO-exclusive ray tracing effects, and offline full path tracing.

Bringing visuals to the next level through vivid imagery in games, camera filters, and virtual reality scenarios, OPPO optimized the PhysRay Engine at both the hardware and software levels. It even partnered with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. to bring a platform to support a potent hardware-based ray tracing to the fore—the Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2. But it was with the introduction of the ReSTIR DI, an optimization algorithm, that the real-time rendering effect of ray tracing has been greatly amplified.

Demonstrating the power of PhysRay Engine during the SIGGRAPH 2023 is the mobile shooter game CampGuard 3.0. The game starkly improves upon its predecessors, bringing a visual quality that is more lucid and realistic. Then, there are the striking depictions of reflections and interactions of sunlight, epitomizing the effects of ray tracing.

Another noteworthy highlight of the event is the demo on Ray Tracing Denoiser. Essentially a noise reduction algorithm, it recreates soft and elaborate shadow effects despite minimal illumination.

Through the joint effort between OPPO and Taichi Lang, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered ray tracing also showed its magic on wallpapers.

Previously a feature unique only to PC, the world saw Mobile Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), thanks to OPPO’s remodeling via AI and rendering pipeline involving its interference engine, ShaderNN.
