Cancer can soon be detected wherever you are.
Researchers from the Washington State University have managed to create a low-cost portable laboratory that can produce lab-quality results.
Lei Li, an assistant professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, was the head of the research team of who made the project.
In this day and age, everyone’s moving fast. Medical professionals and patients want quick results, but they’re limited by the current technology.
Now, with the portable smartphone laboratory, they can do instant diagnoses whether they are in the hospital, ambulance, or in the park.
Lei Li and the WSU research team made an eight channel smartphone spectrometer which can detect human interleukin (IL-6). It is a known biomarker for liver, breast, prostate, epithelial, and lung cancers. By measuring the samples through light spectrum, the type and volume of chemicals can be obtained.
Despite only using only standard lab-controlled tests and the smartphone spectrometer, the device made by the research team of WSU was able to get 99 percent accuracy.
It is said that the portable spectrometer is now being used in real-world scenarios.
Currently, the group’s setup is limited with an iPhone 5. They’re presently working on the design to make it compatible with any smartphone.
