Do modular cameras really have a place in the smartphone space? Tech companies Xiaomi and realme thinks so as both of them showcased their own take on the concept at MWC 2025 in Barcelona.

The latest Xiaomi 15 Ultra already comes with a photography kit, but at MWC 2025, Xiaomi showcased a custom Xiaomi 15 unit with a “proprietary technology” that uses a MagSafe-like surface on the back that lets you attach an actual camera lens.

Xiaomi is calling it the Modular Optical System. The interchangeable lens comes with its own sensor, similar to the Sony QX series from around 10 years ago.

The demoed unit uses a 100-megapixel Light Fusion X Micro Four Thirds sensor, with a 35mm f/1.4 lens.

Meanwhile, realme’s concept is more flexible. It also has its own 1-inch custom Sony sensor, but with a lens mount system so can use a selection of professional lenses.

Again, these are just concepts. The question is, do you actually find a use for this? Or you prefer having a separate professional camera? Let us know in the comments.
