Contrary to previous reports, telco DITO Telecommunity is planning to launch its broadband services in 2021.

With a launch scheduled in the fourth quarter this year, DITO is planning to tap its 5G network to provide a wireless home broadband service. The company’s chief tech officer Rodolfo Santiago revealed that the service is already undergoing usability testing.

Santiago also said that their 5G fixed wireless access service is only addressing the short and medium term, given how it’s faster in terms of deployment. He said the company is looking into fiber-to-the-home solutions in the long run. The company cites right-of-way issues as one of the challenges in rolling out fiber optic cables for FTTH services.

With another service coming, DITO Telecommunity is expecting to reach five to six million subscribers overall by the end of 2021. DITO chief administrative officer Adel Tamano claims that the company welcomes 20,000 new customers on a daily basis. It was only in August when the company celebrated reaching the 2-million milestone.

Tamano also said the telco has invested Php4 billion for a submarine cable project. Previously, DITO was expected to launch its first broadband service in 2022.

  1. Good to hear. Tell us more about the submarine project. I know there was a push to ease up on some of the right of way restrictions.
