Despite original opposition that sees Philippine senators asking for the reconsideration of the contract, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has signed an agreement that gives privilege to China-backed DITO Telecommunity to build cell towers within Philippine military camps.
During a conference at the House of Representatives yesterday, September 8, that sees Lorenzana defending the agency’s 2021 budget, he claims to have signed the contract “recently.”
The response came directly in light of Cagayan de Oro Representative Rufus Rodriguez’s inquisition and concern over the nature of the contract, which begged the question as to whether or not he had signed it.
Although Lorenzana acknowledges the senates disapproval over the agreement, the secretary cites the latter’s subsequent complacence as the cause for the signing of the said contract.
Adding to the matter is also the Armed Force of the Philippines’ affirmation that safety measures will be in place meant to offset the possibility of breaches.
