Right on schedule, the OPPO Reno12 Series 5G is slated to arrive in the Philippines on July 12. We got our hands on it to check out and to share with you the unboxing experience and our initial thoughts about these two new AI smartphones from OPPO.

Before we take a deep look at the new OPPO Reno12 Series 5G. Let’s get them out of the box first, shall we?

First, we have the device itself that’s been wrapped in plastic for protection. OPPO has also included a sleek rubber case that has a dark brown color to match the colorway of the device itself. It also has a textured design that reminds us of a large suitcase.

We also got the standard-issue SIM ejector tool, quick start guide, and safety guide.

Finally, we got OPPO’s fast 80W SUPERVOOC flash charger, which can fully charge the large 5,000mAh battery from 1% to 100% in as fast as 49 minutes.

The OPPO Reno12 Series 5G is available in different colorways. The Reno12 5G is available in three unique colors Astro Silver, Sunset Pink, Matte Brown, while the Reno12 Pro 5G is available in two contrasting colors Space Brown and Nebula Silver.

The Astro Silver features the brand’s Futuristic Fluid Design language. OPPO describes it as “peaceful ripples and waves like liquid metal flowing across your phone,” and we totally agree with that description.

It doesn’t look over the top, but it’s not too subtle and boring, either. The metallic color provides elegance while the ripple effect shines with light to add spice to the design.

We have the same sentiments with the Space Brown, too. The top part has a matte finish with a shimmering effect that looks flashy while staying clean from fingerprint smudges. To spice things up, the bottom part has two shiny textures: one highlighting the OPPO logo while the other provides a striking, elegant appeal.

It goes without saying that these two devices are incredibly comfortable and nice to hold in your hands. They are only about 7.4mm thick, which is noticeably thinner than most phones nowadays. In addition, despite the capable hardware inside, they are light, too, weighing at only 180g.

Like their predecessors, the Reno12 Series 5G’s highlight is their cameras, which are now improved further thanks to AI.

One key AI feature it has — and one we think you’d enjoy playing the most — is called AI Studio. It’s an AI image generator you used to have a different software for, but is now built-in on your smartphone. Just open the app and log in using your MyOPPO account, unlock and choose the filter you want to choose from the different templates available using your OPPOints, pick your photo that you want to transform and see the app work its magic.

OPPO has also made the upgraded AI Eraser 2.0 built-in on the camera app for easy access. It can intelligently analyze distractions from the image, remove them, and apply the right fill for a cleaner image.

More than the cameras, AI was also applied in other parts of the UI to improve your day-to-day life. For one, there’s the AI LinkBoost feature that ensures you’re connected to the right network with less delays and interruptions.

As an example, the OPPO Reno12 Series 5G can recover signals faster when exiting spaces with weak signals such as leaving the elevator and instantly reconnect your data after getting out. It also makes sure that users can send messages or share photos/videos even if they are in basement parking or crowded concerts. In addition, the feature enables users to get accurate locations and routing when using navigation apps in complex city streets with tall buildings.
