YU attempts to redefine flagships as it launches an affordable ‘flagship-breaking’ smartphone.
Micromax subsidiary, YU, launches the Yunicorn – a powerful smartphone for not a lot of cash. At $190, the Yunicorn comes with the Mediatek Helio P10 octa-core chipset, massive 4GB LPDDR3 RAM, and 32GB of internal storage.
YU previously claimed that their Yutopia smartphone was the most powerful in the world.
It also features a full-metal body with chamfered edges with a physical home button below which doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The handset flaunts a 5.5-inch Full HD display with 2.5D curved glass. The back hosts a 13-megapixel autofocus rear camera with phase detection and f/2.2 aperture. A 5-megapixel front-facing camera is included as well.

Among all other important features, the large 4,000mAh battery is one of the main attractions. The company claims that the phone can last for up to two days of heavy usage, and four days for light to moderate use. There’s also fast charging capabilities to quickly fill it up in case you need more juice. The device is not so slim at 8.55mm, but that’s not much of a complain at this price point.
The only disappointment is the outdated Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system out of the box. The company calls its near stock skin as ‘Android on Steroids’. YU promises an Android 6.0 Marshmallow update soon.
The YU Yunicorn will be available in India, exclusively at Flipkart. It’s priced at Rs 12,999 (Php9,000), but buyers should watch out for the Xiaomi-like flash sales to snatch one up. The Yunicorn will be available at physical stores later.
We’ll see if any of our local brands will pick this one up and launch it in PH.
