Select Volkswagen games will soon let you play on its dashboard infotainment screen as the carmaker partners with AirConsole, a company that specializes in casual games you can control with your smartphone.

Volkswagen aims to bring the AirConsole platform to its ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 vehicles as well as the latest Golf, Golf Estate, Tiguan, and Passat models. The carmaker plans to roll out the feature in select European markets by mid-September. More games and territories will follow in the future.

Setting up the controllers is fairly easy. Once you launch the AirConsole app on the Volkswagen Active Infor Display, pull out the phone, and scan the QR code.

The games are only accessible when the car is in park to avoid distractions when driving. The goal here is to entertain the driver and the passengers (even the ones at the back) while waiting for something/someone or when charging at an EV charging station.

This isn’t the first time gaming has been incorporated into EVs. BMW also put AirConsole on select models last year, Tesla also has some on their cars, and Sony and Honda even teased bringing the PS5 on their upcoming EV two years ago, which turned out to be the Afeela prototype.
