After several quarters of slump, the year 2023 closed with a degree of optimism for the global PC market after it reached 31.9 million units during the fourth quarter, per International Data Corporation (IDC).

At a year-over-year growth of 3.8 percent, it exceeded IDC’s forecast of just 3.2 percent growth.

The seasons of the slump, accounting for five quarters before Q4 2023, were largely due to the market setting its sights on clearing the inventory excesses, born from the pandemic era.

All key market segments showed signs of growth, with the commercial segment getting outpaced by the consumer segment. In particular, from mainstream and premium price bands, including gaming.

Amid fierce competition and falling prices, China showed slightly declined growth in 4Q23. This comes in contrast with every major region seeing positive year-on-year growth during the same period.

With fierce competition in the entry to mid-tier monitor space in addition to the soothing gaming PC shipments, gaming monitors get further lowered prices. Roughly 16 percent of all monitor shipments in 2023 were gaming monitors.

As the inventory returns to healthy levels, IDC expects a consistent recovery in shipment volume across 2025. An increasing growth in gaming, decreasing prices for bigger screen-sized models, and faster refresh rates on newer models were all factors said to drive the recovery.
