Sega is developing a new Crazy Taxi game that will be an open-world massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game.

Kenji Kanno, the series producer, has confirmed that the reboot will allow multiple players to play simultaneously. The company is currently testing the game mechanics. The goal is to preserve the original franchise’s essence while adding MMO elements. In the footage, multiple yellow taxis are shown racing each other with convertible police cars in pursuit.

The map appears to be inspired by California, consistent with previous titles, and will come with “theme park-like” features. Sega is investing significant resources into the reboot, which has been dubbed as a AAA title before. According to a job recruitment page, the game is currently being developed using Unreal Engine.

The concept of an open-world Crazy Taxi aligns well with its role as a precursor to GTA and similar games. The MMO aspect presents the potential for both positives and negatives, with the outcome remaining uncertain until its release.

Sega is revisiting numerous classic titles for modern adaptations. Some of these include Streets of Rage, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Shinobi.
