For those who’ve been waiting, it’s finally here. Sony has finally announced the PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Slim.
Technically, Sony is not using the term “slim”, but they didn’t give us a proper name either, so we’ll just keep using the term to avoid confusion.
Going back, the new PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition 2023 is much smaller than the initial model that came out three years ago. As per Sony, the volume has been reduced by 30%. They are also 18% and 24% lighter, respectively.

Sony has also redesigned the removable panels. From two panels, there are now four, which can be noticed via the diagonal split in the middle. The top half is glossy, while the bottom has a matte finish.

There’s a reason for this redesign. One of the panels can be detached to gain access to the removable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. This means you can have it easily replaced when it gets broken.
Or, upgrade the Digital Edition model by purchasing the disc drive, which will be sold on its own for USD79 (~Php4,500). Bear in mind that it’s only compatible with the Slim versions.

Sony has also introduced two new stands: one for horizontal orientation, which comes with the package, and the other for vertical orientation, which is sold separately for USD29 and will work on both old and new models.
Other than the redesign, and the increase in storage (now at full 1TB), nothing has changed internally.
Now, the price. The PlayStation 5 Slim will retail for USD499 (~Php28,300) while the Digital Edition Slim will retail for USD449 (~Php25,500). They will be available in the United States in November and in other markets after.
