Sorry, you can’t bring your possessions with you to the afterlife, including your Steam library of video games. And according to Valve, you cannot transfer your account to another person when you die.

A ResetEra forum user recently contacted Steam Support to inquire if their Steam account ownership could be transferred via a will. A customer support representative responded with a concise answer: “Unfortunately, Steam accounts and games are non-transferable. Steam Support can’t provide someone else with access to the account or merge its contents with another account. I regret to inform you that your Steam account cannot be transferred via a will.”

The representative’s response aligns with the Steam Subscriber Agreement, which stipulates that you, as a subscriber of Steam, are prohibited from selling or transferring your account. You are not allowed to charge others for the right to use your account and games as well.

So, no, Steam currently doesn’t have an official way for you to pass your account and games to someone else, even if you name a beneficiary in your will. This is pretty much the standard policy for companies that license their software.

Regardless, this inability to transfer account ownership has not stopped Steam users to make use of loopholes and workarounds. For instance, one can simply give their username and password to someone else. Sure, it’s a violation of Steam’s policies, but how will they know if the account inheritor does not notify Steam of the transfer?
