The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is looking to expand the availability of its fast, free, and secure public internet hotspot connectivity from the current 18,000 Free WiFi for All locations across the Philippine archipelago to 50,000.

This initiative to provide free Internet connectivity is through DICT’s Free Public Internet Access Program (FPIAP), which is mandated to deliver free internet services in public spaces and reach priority, geographically isolated, and disadvantaged areas.

The current placements of the free Wi-Fi include national and local government offices, basic education institutions, state universities and colleges (SUCs), TESDA training institutions, public hospitals, health centers, and rural health units (RHUs), as well as parks, plazas, libraries, and barangay reading centers. It will be extended to airports, seaports, and transport terminals.

The DICT is also launching the ‘JuanSIM ng Bayan,’ which will give away one million free SIM cards to disadvantaged communities, particularly schools without Internet access, in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd).

The DICT also plans to deploy satellite internet to connect 10,000 to 15,000 remote schools by next school year.
