Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) issued a warning last Saturday against online sellers implementing a “no video, no refund” policy.

The “no video, no refund” policy by online merchants requires buyers to record a video of themselves opening their parcels. In case the item is defective or something is missing, only those who have video proof will be granted a refund or replacement.

As per DTI Assistant Secretary Amanda Nograles, the said policy falls under deceptive, unfair, and unconscionable sales acts and practices. That’s a violation of Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

Nograles affirmed that the “no return, no exchange” policy is prohibited by the DTI as it’s within the consumer’s right to return a product he/she found defective.

She added that the customer has the option to return, ask for a replacement, full refund, or have the defective item repaired.

Nograles also pointed out that such a policy is an example of a deceptive sales act and highlighted such an act can happen before, during, and after the transaction.
