The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) gave an update last Wednesday that the first phase of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 Cavite Extension is nearing completion and is on track to be open for operations in the last quarter of 2024.

According to LRMC, the project is already 97 percent complete. They are already installing staircases and louvers, doing drainage work, secondary steelwork, setting up telecommunication infrastructure, and a few more.

LRMC is also doing test runs of LRT 1 trains on the new rails to iron out any possible compatibility issues and ensure operations preparedness.

The LRT 1 Cavite Extension will add five stations to the existing line: Redemptionist Station, Manila International Airport Station, Asia World Station, Ninoy Aquino Station, and Dr. Santos Station which is located in Sucat, Parañaque.

With this upgrade, the LRT 1 will now be 6.2 kilometers long providing rail service in key cities of Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay, and Parañaque, and can transport up to 600,000 commuters daily.

Phase 2 of the project will add the Las Piñas and Zapote stations, while the third and final phase is for the Niog Station in Bacoor, Cavite.

Once all the phases are complete, the 11.8-kilometer project is expected to transport 800,000 commuters daily.
