Thanks to the collaboration between local telcos, internet service providers, and the Department of Transportation, Ninoy Aquino International Airport offers free WiFi for passengers. But it seems the experience leaves much to be desired, as the WiFi speed at the airport is among the slowest all over the world.
Back in June, internet analytics firm Ookla released a report on the performance of more than 50 of the world’s busiest airports during Q1 2024. Seven of the airports with the fastest Wi-Fi download speeds were located in the US, with San Francisco International Airport taking the top spot at 173.55Mbps. Six airports in the US also ranked highest in terms of upload speeds.
In terms of mobile download speeds, Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar ranks first with a median download speed of 442.49Mbps. Eight airports in China are noted for having some of the fastest mobile upload speeds.
At NAIA, meanwhile, the listed median Wi-Fi speeds are 17.9Mbps for download and 17.38Mbps for upload, with a latency of 9.25ms. The lowest median Wi-Fi download speed recorded was 5.11Mbps at Mexico City International Airport.
Passengers at NAIA are generally better off using mobile data for downloads, as Ookla’s Speedtest data shows that the airport has better mobile download speeds at 48.86Mbps, with a median mobile upload speed of 16.65Mbps.
Regarding overall internet speeds, the Philippines currently ranks 69th in mobile (33.19Mbps download, 7.41Mbps upload) and 50th in fixed broadband (94.42Mbps download, 94.13Mbps upload), based on Speedtest Global Index as of June 2024.
