Cherry Mobile sure knows how to keep momentum as seen in its #WeAreOnFire launch event. Along with the announcement of its latest phablet, the company has also unveiled its first ever octa-core smartphone—the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2.

For now, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2 is the only one of two local smartphones to come equipped with a processor with eight cores, the other being the Starmobile Diamond X1. So how do these two compare? In terms of price, the former wins at just Php12,999 since the latter costs almost a thousand higher.

The X1 does boast a bigger display, but it can’t compete with the higher resolution and pixel density of the Z2. Like the Titan Pro, this Cherry Mobile offering also uses One Glass Solution (OGS) touchscreen technology for its display, but that aspect has failed to reduce the profile thickness to 7mm, which the X1 has. Until we have an actual review of the units, though, we can’t give an official verdict on which is better.

Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2 Specs

  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • 5-inch capacitive touchscreen (1080×1920 True HD), ~441ppi
  • Octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor
  • Mali 450MP GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • microSD support up to 64GB
  • 18-megapixel BSI main camera, with autofocus and LED flash
  • 8-megapixel front camera
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • 3G, HSDPA
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS
  • Dimensions: 145 x 69.8 x 7.5mm
  • Li-Ion 2000mAh battery

Besides OGS, the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2 also uses Dragontrail Glass for added scratch resistance. We don’t have the exact clock speed for the CPU, but the MediaTek MT6592 processor is known to achieve speeds between 1.7GHz and 2.0GHz. In any case, the phone performs quite well in the Antutu benchmark, having reached a “great” score of 26521.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean runs out of the box, which may be disappointing to some. Fortunately, Cherry Mobile promises a 4.4 KitKat update sometime in March. Other specs of the Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2 include dual-SIM capability with dual standby, FM radio tuner, and USB On-The-Go support. The 18-megapixel shooter at the back of the device has a back-illuminated sensor and can record videos up to 1080p at 30fps.

The Cherry Mobile Cosmos Z2 will be available for sale beginning tomorrow at SM North EDSA.

So, given the two choices, which local octa-smartphone will you go for?

  1. Ganda sana ng majority features kaso sad to discover na 2000milli Amp hour (mAh) lang ang battery nya..fast draining ito sa mga HD screens at Octa-core processors. but the pricing is at its good range pero sana may available na battery ang CM na mas mataas pa sa 2000mAh na compatible din sa device na ito, like 3000mAh ok na.. FYi CM..
