Need an entry-level Android smartphone without spending truckloads of money? Then you might want to take a look at these affordable devices: the Cherry Mobile Onyx, Ace, and Snap.
For only Php1,499, the Cherry Mobile Onyx is one of the cheapest local smartphones available—and also the cheapest of the CM handsets named after precious stones. Powered by a 1GHz single core processor and Mali 300 graphics, the Onyx has a 3.5-inch capacitive screen, 2-megapixel main camera, and dual-SIM capability. Storage can be expanded externally via microSD for up to 32GB. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth.
Priced the same as the Onyx is the Cherry Mobile Ace. What sets the two apart besides the design is iffy—as shown in the clipped image above, there’s not much of a difference in specs. Cherry Mobile has somehow forgotten to mention what graphics chip runs under the Ace’s hood, so it’s possible that these two handsets may have different SoCs inside. If we ever get hold of these two devices and make reviews, we’ll let you know any distinguishing features.
If you can dish out Php200 more, there’s the Cherry Mobile Snap. Once again, what we have here is a 3.5-inch device with a capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz single core Spreadtrum SP8810 processor, 2MP main camera, Wi-Fi b/g/n, and Bluetooth. Released last year with an initial SRP of Php2,499, the Snap now costs Php1,499 and offers 256MB of RAM, 512MB internal storage (up to 16GB via microSD), FM radio, GPS, and a 1100mAh battery. Available colors are black and white.
All these three handsets are bundled with a free cable tie and come preloaded with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. While that version of Google’s mobile operating system may not have the latest features and compatibility with newer apps, it works just fine for the basic phone functionalities.
