Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max has captured the title of the best-selling smartphone for the first quarter of 2024, with iPhones capturing five of the top ten positions in the global sales rankings. Apple’s supremacy in the smartphone market continues as it outshines Samsung, its closest competitor, particularly on a model-by-model comparison.
Counterpoint Research’s latest findings show that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max leads the charts with a 4.4% slice of the market during Q1 2024. Trailing closely is the iPhone 15 with a 4.3% market share, and the iPhone 15 Pro with 3.7%. The previous generation iPhone 14 also stands strong, securing the fourth spot with a 1.9% share, ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Further down the list, the iPhone 15 Plus holds its own in eighth place, accounting for 1.3% of the market.
These figures are reflective of a similar trend from the first quarter of the previous year, where the iPhone 14 series dominated. Back in Q1 2023, the iPhone 14 was the frontrunner with a 4.7% market share, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 4.3%.

While it’s a 50-50 split in the top 10, IDC and Canalys’ latest reports say that Samsung is still the #1 smartphone maker globally.
For the first time, the Q1 2024 results showed that all top ten smartphones boast 5G connectivity, marking a significant technological milestone.

Purchasing patterns have evolved significantly, as observed by Counterpoint. The Pro models now constitute half of all iPhone sales for the quarter, a substantial increase from the 24% share they held four years prior in Q1 2020.
This shift shows a broader consumer trend towards premium devices, with seven of the top ten smartphones falling into the premium category, each with a suggested retail price exceeding $600.
