Counterpoint Research just released the global top 10 best-selling phones for 2022.
The top 10 best-selling list for 2022 was dominated by Apple with 8 iPhones. Taking the top spot was the budget-friendly iPhone 13, which takes 5% of the global market share or 28% of all the iPhones sold for the said year. In fact, the device was the best-selling phone in the UK, US, China, France, and Germany from September 2021 to August 2022.
It is followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max with 2.6% and the newly-announced 1.7%. The fifth for nineth spot belongs to the iPhone 13 Pro (1.6%), iPhone 12 (1.5%), iPhone 14 (1.4%), iPhone 14 Pro (1.2%), and the cheapest smartphone Apple makes, the iPhone SE 2022 (1.1%).
That said, only two Android phones made it to the top 10 list, and they are all entry-level Samsung phones. There’s the Galaxy A13 at number 4 with 1.6% and the Galaxy A03 at number 10 with 1.1%.
Counterpoint expects that the market share of the top 10 smartphones for 2023 will increase as “brands focus on clearing inventory and optimizing their launches.”
The research firm also predicts that brands will make their “portfolios leaner in 2023 to minimize cannibalization”. In fact, Counterpint reported that the total number of active smartphone models in 2022 are only around 3,600, which is significantly lower than 2021’s 4,200+.
Brands are also expected to focus on the premiumization of their offerings “to translate volumes into profitability.”
