In a bid to secure an advantageous position against TikTok, Facebook is reportedly using cash to pay out TikTok creators and make a shift to Instagram Reels, Wall Street Journal reports.

Acquired by Facebook in 2012, Instagram has had undergone changes throughout the years, the most recent of which includes a feature that mimics TikTok in its short-video contents.

According to Sensor Tower, a mobile app market intelligence firm, TikTok got a total download of 2 billion in April this year, suggesting the app’s relevance in a tech- and entertainment-savvy market.

Currently available in Brazil, India, France, and Germany, Reels is being eyed for release to more countries this month.

Facebook’s aggressive campaign against the reigning platform comes in light of the perceived possibility of the mobile app getting banned in the United States, similar to its ban in India
