In the aftermath of the conflict between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the border Ladakh which resulted to the death of some 20 in the former, the Indian government is taking the fight into the mobile space by banning as many as 59 Chinese-made apps.

The rule was made effective last Monday night that saw apps like UC Browser, Shareit, TikTok, etc. illegal for users in India. The initiative is taken to blame the said applications’ detrimental effects to the country’s “defense, integrity, and sovereignty.”

While the recent brawl at Ladakh might seem to be the last straw that broke the camel’s back, the issue with the growing popularity of Chinese applications has been a concern prior.

Just last April 16, the Indian government has sent out an advisory to Zoom in the wake of the scandal which exposes security issues with meetings conducted through it.

The United States, especially, regards Chinese-made applications as a kind of geopolitical and ideological arm of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The move to ban popular apps like TikTok is a major blow to Chinese application developers considering that a large majority of their users are in the densely-populated region of India.
