In a bid to bolster security among its users by punishing digital criminals for their act of taking over someone else’s account, GCash is rolling out the ‘DoubleSafe’ program.

Beginning March 2023, all GCash users will be required to activate the DoubleSafe feature, which is essentially the user’s facial recognition that kicks in whenever the user logs their account in a new device.

It means that on top of the previous two levels of Two-Factor Authentication—One Time PIN (OTP) and Mobile PIN (MPIN)—users who choose to log their account in a separate device the first time will have their faces checked for an additional layer of authentication.

Consequently, that meant any illicit access to anyone’s account after having their 2FAs compromised will be detected as a result.

To keep the scheme’s punitive element in place, GCash is coordinating with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), following an official memorandum of agreement in 2022, to go after fraudsters and scammers once issues arise.

In addition to DoubleSafe, GCash is upping its security measures by spreading needed education against suspicious links, fake sellers, and other forms of scams via a series of awareness materials dubbed the ‘GSafeTayo’ campaign.

Considered the truest form of account security, GCash rolled out the security feature to equip its customers in the fight.
