The word about the new adaptation of the action anime came during the Jump Festa ’22 event on December 19, 2021. Liden Films was said to be handling the overhauling of the anime at the time of the initial announcement.
Featuring some of the best in the Japanese animation industry, the production crew for the new adaptation includes Terumi Nishii (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable) for the character designs, Hideyuki Kurata (Made in Abyss) for the story, Hideyo Yamamoto (My Master Has No Tail) for the direction, and Yuu Takami (Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin) for the composition.

Based on the manga of the same name by author Nobuhiro Watsuki, Rurouni Kenshin follows the life of a former assassin Battousai to a life of a wanderer, set during the Meiji era.
The manga began serialization on April 25, 1994, until September 1, 1999, by Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump, which inspired a 95-episode TV series, a 1997 anime movie, three original video animations (OVAs), and four live-action films.
Intended to be ongoing, Watsuki’s sequel manga Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Hen was temporarily put on suspension following the mangaka’s controversial possession of child pornography that fined him 200,000 yen (US$1,521.71).
Publication for the manga subsequently resumed on June 2018, leading to eight tankoubon volumes released as of January 2023.
