You must be into manhwa to have known Solo Leveling, which is a title that has grown into popularity since it went into serialization in South Korea. But did you know also that the massively popular manhwa is also about to get an anime adaptation and is coming soon?

What is the Solo Leveling story?

Set in a world where mankind’s safety from extinction rests on the hands of magic-wielding hunters against monsters, Solo Leveling is about an infamous feeble player named Sung Jin-Woo. A player who, by happenstance, earned a super unique ability to go beyond limits, following a close encounter with death and with a mysterious program called System in-game. Encapsulating everything, the manhwa makes a unique rendition of Korea by fusing it with certain MMORPG elements.

The manga itself came to fruition due to the artistic partnership between its creative writer, Chu-Gong, and illustrators, Jang Sung-rak/Sang-rak and Gi So-Ryeong.

What’s the current status of the manhwa?

As of December 29, 2021, the serialization of the Solo Leveling manhwa is already finished, closing the entire storyline at 179 chapters.

Solo Leveling anime adaptation

There had been rumors that the beloved manga is getting an anime adaptation. This is no longer just speculation but a fact, per source.

And yes, even though the source came from South Korea, it will take a Japanese animation company to make the anime rendition, and not be an “aeni” (Korean counterpart of “anime”).

More specifically, by A-1 Pictures, the same company that’s renowned for its previous works with Erased and Sword Art Online. Shunsuke Nakashige will be helming the project as the director while Noboru Kimura will act as the head writer and Tomoko Sudo as head of the character design. Meanwhile, the music composition will be done by Hiroyuki Sawano, who is also known for his notable works with Kill la Kill, Blue Exorcist, and Attack on Titan.

While fans of the manga may expect to be familiar with the anime adaptation once it starts airing, some changes can also be anticipated. In particular, how the source material will be based on the Japanese translation of the manhwa, which sees certain changes from the original. Take, for instance, the main protagonist’s name which becomes Shun Mizuno rather than Jin-Woo and the setting being situated in Tokyo instead of Seoul.
