A Philippine Congressman is asking Chinese tech giant Xiaomi to recall two of its smartphone models being sold locally over dead boot issues.

Rizal 2nd District Rep. Fidel Nograles is calling Xiaomi to recall units of the Xiaomi Redmi 9T and POCO M3.

The demand for recall came about after a number of consumers reported dead boot issues after purchasing brand-new units of said smartphone models.

Dead boot issues happen when the device won’t power on or cannot be detected by a computer when connected.

Some of the buyers have been advised to file their complaints to the Department of Trade and Industry. Although, Rep. Nograles said that it’s better if the tech company handles the issue squarely by recalling the problematic models.

“Xiaomi’s steps to address the issue are not just too late but also too inconvenient. The dead boot issue has been happening for months and what they are offering are just repair or replacement with the same model.”

“We need to stop this unending inconvenience; it is about time they recall these problematic phone models and give the victims newer phone units that do not have issues.”

Rep. Fidel Nograles, House Committee on Justice Vice Chairman

The lawmaker is pushing for a recall as users who may not be experiencing the problems now may have it in the future — at the time where the unit is already past the warranty period.

Nograles added that “We know that Xiaomi’s rise to fame is due to their brand of selling quality phones for low prices. Sadly, their reputation is tarnished with this dead boot issue. They should act fast as they are not the sole brand that offers affordable phones. They might lose their market share if this issue persists.”
